Twitter Training

In the past I have discussed the use of twitter and all the different types of ways that twitter can be used.  I have given written instructions on how to go to twitter and get your account but here are a few videos that may help you out more.

While the Renegade University has been down, Ann Sieg and Mike Klingler have not stopped providing you and I with the most up to date training for free. And teaching the techniques of twitter is no exception. Here is Mike in a few videos that will help you get into and beyond with twitter.

I know that you will find these helpful and full of information.

Go to Twitter Training.

As you become comfortable with Twitter, you will find that there are many tools out there that help you gather followers. Unfortunately, I have an issue with some of these tools. The reason for my issue is that I don't know many of these people and they don't know me or care about me and what I have to say. I am not sure but somewhere this doesn't seem like socializing to me. I have always taken my time to find "like minded people" to share my interests with. Some are just following me to be following me. Anyway, I was happy to see that someone agreed with me.

I would like to share with you a letter that Mike Dillard of Magnetic Sponsoring sent out and it really struck a cord with me. I don't have the thousands that he has but even with my hundreds I am finding twitter interesting and rewarding when connecting with those that I know and some that I don't, as yet.

Here is his letter.

I Have A Dilemma...

I have a dilemma Richard…
It’s been the source of an internal debate for a few weeks now, and I’d like to get your thoughts…
I’m talking about Twitter, and the single question that we must all eventually answer…
Do you follow someone just because they followed you? Or do you only follow people you genuinely know and want to follow?
Over the past few months, I’ve done both.
After talking to my good friend and social media maven, Perry Belcher, I decided to “reciprocal follow” everyone who was following me about two months ago.
There are two reasons you’d want to do this…
1: It’s polite.
2: It helps you gain exposure, which will help increase your number of followers.
As of today, I follow around 10,000 people, and have 11,900-ish followers at http://www.Twitter.com/Mike_Dillard
Looking back, I’m not convinced that was the best move to make, and here’s why…
It’s not the number of people who follow you on Twitter that matters, it’s the number of people who actually listen to you.
And if everyone is just “reciprocal following” everyone, not because they WANT to listen to that person, but because they’re trying to increase their exposure and number of followers, then we have a problem...
Everyone’s following everyone, but no one’s really listening.
When I had 8,000 followers and followed 50, I knew that all 8,000 people subscribed to my “Tweets” because they genuinely wanted to plug into my life, and hear what I had to say.
That’s no longer the case.
And it gets worse…
Once you follow 500+ people, you have to start using specialized software like www.TweetDeck.com, just to filter and manage so many messages. And if you already use TweetDeck like me, you’ve probably set up a custom sub-list of real friends so you can separate all of their messages from the masses of people you don’t know.
How genuine is that?
In the end, reciprocal following simply dilutes the power of an application like Twitter because it’s a behavior that’s motivated by greed instead of authenticity, just so we can all enjoy the illusion of having “more followers”. That doesn’t sit right with me, so after many days of thought, I’m going to do some surgery on my Twitter account and * gasp * “unfollow” the 10,000+ people I don’t truly know.
If you’re one of them, please do not take it personally. It’s not. I'm sure I'll lose quite a few people during this process, but that's fine. If that's what it costs to be authentic, then so be it.

And if you continue following me because you truly have an interest in what I have to say and offer, then THANK YOU. That’s what this tool is all about. My Twitter address is http://www.Twitter.com/Mike_Dillard

In the end, I feel that any true “following” you build in your life should be based on providing real value, not the perpetuation of an illusion daisy-chained from one person to the next.

(If you feel strongly about this as well and would like to share this letter, you're welcome to do so as you wish).

Sincerely,
Mike Dillard

Twitter -- Using it to its fullest

Have you ever wondered what all the twittering has been about?

I certainly was one that was not quite in the know and wanted to be. Even though I do not use Twitter to its fullest, mainly because I don't have nor do I understand some of the technology, I am able to be a part of the community to draw traffic to my sites.

So what is Twitter

Twitter is one of 50 areas where people come together to share ideas, thoughts, and information in 140 characters or less. To some the contraints of twitter is to much, and some try way to hard to sell sell sell. This is not a place to sell, it is a place to share and be seen. Therefore the constraints of 140 characters or less is fun.

Twitter is also a place where you connect with "like minded" people. People that, for me, are more wordly and have so much to offer. Therefore I grow in their light and knowledge.

Although there are probably 100+ applications of twitter these are just a few that have helped me get more out of twitter and I do hope that you find these helpful as well.

Setting up your Twitter Account

Twitter is simple and easy and free. Just go to Twitter.com and sign-up. Once you have an account with Twitter you will want to step up your Twitter Profile page.

Some things to do:

  • Add a nice background to your Twitter page. You may use one that they provide or you may add your own background.
  • Use a profile photo. This is a photo of you, not an avitar or object or logo.
  • Check messages, @replies and direct messages on a daily basis and start building relationships. Do not sell. If done correctly they will buy.
  • Set up your Twitter with a separate email account. I highly recommend using gmail at this point. The reason is that gmail has several other tools and applications that you may want to use later. Again, gmail is free. Also, if you intend to grow your Twitter following than you may want twitter on its own email. There could be many emails.
  • Make sure that your URL is in your profile and that is functioning properly.

Set up your Tweetlater Account

Here you will want to go to Tweetlater.com. I recommend going through the tutorials here. They are very easy to follow, because I did, and they are very concise and step by step.

  • Use the same email that you use for your twitter account. Do not use the gmail address at this time.
  • You will want to set up an auto follow message for all your new followers. Be sure to put in your URL in the message. Your URL should begin with http:// and as with all of Twitter it can only have 140 characters or less.
  • Use Keywords that you use in your niche marketing. This will get more people to look at your site.
  • The auto welcome box should be activated so to send your private direct message.
  • You can also set up scheduled tweets. Much like an auto responder. I don't recommend this unless you are going to be away for awhile and have no means to communicate. If you do choose this option, don't send to many, one recommendation I found said no more than 1 per hour. Oh my.. More than that will be considered "spam."

Tweetlater has many more options that I have not gotten into. Look into them and see what fits you and your business best.

Twellow - An effective way to generate followers.

You will need to go to http://www.twellow.com. Twellow is a quick and effective way to find people that are either in the same business as yourself or in the niche that you are in.

What you want to do here is search for any topic, person, niche, or even a specific country that is of interest to you. You will do this in the search bar on the page.

Next:

  • Be sure that you are logged into your Twitter account before moving forward.
  • Look over the categories and find the people with the largest list of followers.
  • Don't just pick anyone. Be specific and read about them. If you choose to follow go to their page and click on their followers and start following.
  • As said before be specific in who you follow. In the beginning I followed people with and without pictures in their profiles. But, I have begun to follow only those with a picture. This way I am able to connect better with them.
  • I have been told that you can follow up to 400 people per day safely. Even though this can be done I don't recommend it. As with everything, be natural, don't force this. You don't want to risk having your account disabled either.

Karma ----What is Karma

Karma is a tool that will allow you to "unfollow" people that you find are not following you.

  • To reach Karma go to http://dossy.org/twitter/karma/
  • Karma should only be used once you have 2000 people following you. I don't know a lot about Karma because I have not reached this number yet. But I do want you to know about it. You see twitter won't let you follow more people than 2000 until you have 2000 people following you.
  • So, once you reach this magical number, Karma will allow you to "unfollow" those that aren't following you.
  • Once you get over this use this "unfollow" tool as needed.

Clear as mud. I know that when you reach this point it will make more sense. Certainly a goal for many.

Twitterfeed

Twitterfeed is another site that you may find very useful. This site like many of the others is not directly connected to twitter. They just really compliment each other.

Twitterfeed will tap into your RSS feeds on whatever schedule that you choose, if it sees anything new, twitterfeed will send out a link to twitter, identi.ca or ping.fm and a couple of others.

You have full control of when and where you want these feeds to be distributed. But, you must remember again and again, these are social sites. People do not want to be sold. Therefore remember that you must be natural, let people know what else you are involve in or interested in.

Go to Twitterfeed:

  • Upon going to twitterfeed you will need to register.
  • Type in a username and e-mail and then you must choose 3 to 5 secret categories. These are going to become your idenfication to get back in so write them down.
  • From this point you will be checking you e-mail with a contact code and you will receive another ID besides your username. Be sure to write these down.
  • Once you are in merely follow the instructions and set up your account and profile.
  • This truly can be a good way to get new traffic to your site.

Other fun tools that Twitter offers

There is Tweetdeck and Twittercounter.

  • Tweetdeck is a tool that allows you to see all you messages on one screen. This is especially helpful if you have a group of people that see their messages all togeter.
  • It also has a shorten URL tool. This is really helpful especially if you are trying to promote an article or site that has a long URL. Remember you only have 140 characters to get your point across. There is also http://snipurl.com that will do this for you as well. Both are extremely helpful tools and easy access back to twitter.
  • If you find that you don't want to follow someone anymore you can delete them 1 at a time.
  • Access this through http://www.tweetdeck.com

  • Twittercounter is a tool that allows you see how many new followers you are recieving.
  • It has been said to be similar to google analytics.
  • This will allow you to follow and track your follows and to see how quickly you are and will continue to grow. If you are into this as a business than by all means this will work for you. If you are growing naturally than you shouldn't have to concern yourself much over this one. It all depends on your goals and how you choose to achieve them.

I do hope that you have found some valuable information here. It has helped me grow and as I said to connect with people with the same goals.

If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to comment or to contact me at any time.

P.S. For those of you looking for even more I highly recommend the Traffic Generation Explosion Site.  They have done a ton of research about Twitter and much of their information is free.

P.S.S. Here is another area with many more twitter applications. Small Business Applications has identiffied 27 twitter tools.
